FIRE.  IMMINENT. CHANGE.

Nicole and I have been in the war room a lot lately. Tirelessly weighing the options of our next move, wanting to insure it is based on real opportunity for progress and not the floating wanderlust of our pre-baby years.
We came to Santa Fe on a whim, plain and simple. We did not have friends or family waiting for us here, we didn't have an apartment, we didn't have a car, we didn't have a clue.
We carved our own path. We did it together.
When Nicole became pregnant with Atty, our future opened up somehow... suddenly we had something to really live for, something to build towards. We knew we wanted to better our situation and create a great life for this new little soul.
Santa Fe was a great place to be for those 9 months of pregnancy. We both had steady employment that we didn't totally hate, yet. We had our midwife, Tonya, who would come over and check Nicole out. But most importantly we had each other and our long after dinner walks around canyon road and through the mountains surrounding our house. It really was quite nice, all things considered.
Once Atty was born we moved out to the "care-taking-situation" where we took care of farm animals and entertained the rantings of an ornery former socialite and her maddening ways. That experience officially began our deep descent into what can only be called a severe case of the "get me the hell out of here's."
The idea of the very landscape we were inhabiting shifted in our minds. The once soft and glowing adobe became hot and harsh in the scorching summer sun. The vast beautiful open spaces became meaningless sprawling ranches or bourgeois manhattan winter trophy pueblos. The juniper and sage seemed less attractive. It became so dry and so hot. So desolate and isolating.
We realized we were ready for a change.
But not quite ready to leave the state completely, after all, it was fate that brought us here... this strange land that we knew nothing about, this wild western wonderland with its southwest charm... chilis and turquoise. We were, and still are fully in love with New Mexico. Therefore we could never just up and leave. So we moved back into town.
That was a few months ago. Before the summer set in. Before the fires began.
